Good Wordle strategy is not about memorizing today's answer. It is about gathering information fast, then cashing it in. This guide covers opening words, greens/yellows/grays, duplicate letters, hard mode, and how to use the free Wordle solver as a helper instead of a spoiler.
Start with information, not a lucky stab
Your first guess should test common letters in common seats. Classic openers such as SLATE, CRANE, TRACE, and STARE do that: they mix frequent consonants (S, T, R, N, L) with vowels (A, E). There is no single perfect starter, because Wordle answers are curated and change over time. A strong opener is one that splits the remaining word list, not one that happens to be yesterday's winner.
Avoid rare letters (Q, J, X, Z) on guess one unless you already know they belong. Those are endgame tools, not scouts.
Guess two: solve or probe
After the first colors, pick a job for guess two:
- Solving guess - play a real candidate that could be the answer. Use this when the leftover list is already small.
- Probe guess - play a word that tests several undecided letters even if it cannot win yet. Use this when many words still fit (for example a bunch of _ATCH words).
Burning a turn on a probe feels wasteful until it cuts ten lookalikes down to two. That is usually cheaper than guessing BLAST, then PLAST, then FLATS one by one.
Read green, yellow, and gray like a filter
Treat each tile as a rule, not a vibe:
- Green - that letter is locked in that spot. Later guesses should keep it there (especially in hard mode).
- Yellow - the letter is in the word, but not in that seat. Do not reuse that exact position.
- Gray - that letter is out, unless the same letter is also yellow or green in the same guess. Wordle's duplicate rules mean a gray extra D can still sit next to a yellow D: there is one D, not two.
Duplicate letters are where a lot of streaks die. If you guess DODGE and only one D lights up, stop assuming two Ds. If both light up, you now know the count.
Letter frequency still matters in the endgame
When a few words remain, prefer the candidate whose letters show up often in that leftover set. If you are staring at MATCH, PATCH, LATCH, and WATCH, one probe that tests M, P, L, and W (a word like PLUMB, if it fits your other clues) beats guessing those four in a row. Usual Wordle answers are ranked first. Valid guesses that fit your colors but are not in that answer pool show up lower. That backup exists because NYT adds new solution words over time.
Hard mode is a different game
Hard mode forces you to use revealed greens and yellows. That blocks some probe words, so you need a cleaner opener and more careful yellow placement. If yellows lock you into a family of lookalikes, try a word that still obeys the locks while swapping the unknown slots. The solver still helps: enter the same colors you saw, then pick from the ranked list using only letters you are allowed to play.
Use a solver without wrecking the puzzle
A Wordle helper is most useful after two or three guesses, not before guess one. Enter what you already played, mark the tiles, and skim the ranked list. You can:
- steal one high-ranked candidate as your next guess, or
- scan the list for a letter pattern you had not considered.

Quick Wordle tips
- Do not start with a word full of uncommon letters.
- Plurals ending in S are rarer as official answers than they used to be. Treat a trailing S as a maybe, not a default.
- When stuck on vowels, a second-guess word with O, U, or I can finish the map A and E started.
- If two greens leave a crowd of similar words, one probe is usually better than three 50/50 flips.
- Re-check duplicate-letter colors before you decide a letter is fully dead.
